Is this good for turning buttons into keychains or necklaces?

That's exactly what this is for. It's more for key chains than necklaces. It's plastic and wouldn't lay quite right without some additional connectors if used as a pendant. It works with 1-1/4 collet button sets. I would recommend that you take a look at our Accessories section to get complete key chain sets, rather than ordering from the Bits-n-Pieces section.
